BLUES & JAZZ
[NOTE: I’m now able to start expanding this section greatly; have decided to list everything by performers as listed on the discs themselves – collectors in these genre tend to look for separate tracks by their favorite artists, not necessarily specific albums; and compilations have been remixed, re-shuffled, re-labeled, so often down through the years that most interested clients, or so they’ve told me, would prefer to cherry-pick their CDs by individual tracks, which is a pain in the ass for me, but that’s OK, ‘cause I have the master CDs well organized. I’m starting off slowly, but I plan to add at least 15-20 items per month, so watch this space. If your favorite track by Blind Ethnic Pig-Iron or Hep-Kat Gazoondheit hasn’t shown up yet, sooner or later it will.]

"RITUAL" – Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers. [It was 1958 and there was exactly one, count ‘em, ONE "jazz/beatnick/ poetry reading coffee shop in all of Charlotte, North Carolina and this is the kind of jazz the owner, Richard Stavrakis, liked to play. It sounded cool enough to us, as we sat there trying to look cool in our ill-fitting sunglasses, waiting for the next open-mike poetry-reading session to start. Talk about day-trippers! Rumors abounded concerning the stuff that went down after the under-legal-age wanna-bes went home, but ol’ Richard was cool; he never confirmed or denied anything and to their credit, our parents continued to let us hang out there long after the first police raid. To this day, I associate the sound of West Coast laid-back chamber-music jazz with mellow summer nights up at the coffee house (and a few later with some not so laid back memories of steamy couplings on the funky rolled-up mattresses in the storerooms. So my opinion of this album admittedly IS tinctured by nostalgia. So sue me. Blakey’s sidemen for this LP were: Jackie McClean, tenor sax; Bill Hardimann, trumpet;Sam Dockery, piano; Spanky DeBrest, bass; and of course, Blakey all over the percussion. The record’s only in fair shape, but it’s listenable.
