Winter Fire

“I enjoyed every word of Winter Fire and congratulate the author on brilliantly evoking the image of Jean Sibelius – the master of the enigma. It is a great thriller, too, and one of those rare books you just simply can’t put down.”
-- Maestro Lorin Maazel, Music Director, the New York Philharmonic

“Graphic, yet haunting…with a terrifying climax.”
   --The New York Times

“An astonishing performance, full of unparalleled knowledge of music and war, perfectly interpreted into the story with characters that are wonderfully vivid.”
        --Carolyn Kizer, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet

Signed Copies

Autographed books are a better investment than most stocks; they appreciate rapidly; they make thoughtful and unique gifts; they give book-lovers a personal connection with an author, and vice versa.

Just let me know how you want the book(s) to be signed. Would you prefer a generic “collector’s” format (“Best wishes from the author…name and date”, or inscribed in a very particular, personalized way (“To Cousin Jim, my favorite Civil War re-enactor, from Bob – Happy birthday, you old Rebel!”). Enclose cash, check or money order (I’m not set up to process credit cards), and I’ll send the requested items to you in a sturdy protective mailer.

Prices are based on retail list price plus the cost of the mailer and third-class postage, along with a small surcharge for the inscriptions. If, for reasons of time or other considerations, you want the books shipped first class, please add another $5.00 to the prices shown here. Overnight shipping is of course another option, and it’ll cost you, but we can discuss that by email.

Please allow 3-4 weeks for delivery. I can only afford to keep a relative modest stock of each title and a sudden run on a book may require me to re-order from the publisher, which can add another ten days or so to the process.

The following books are in print, in stock, and readily available:

The Civil War in North Carolina Trilogy

Individual volumes: $23.00. The complete set, specially prices, for $60.00

NOTE: The hardback edition (from Piedmont Impressions) was limited to a print-run of 2500 copies and specimens in good condition are exceedingly rare. The last time I saw all three volumes in hardback format (in mediocre condition), on E Bay, the bidding started at $200.00. I have exactly TWO copies for sale, and the bidding starts at $35.00 each. Unfortunately, I do NOT have a hardback copy of the most popular volume, Bushwhackers, but I do have Volumes 1 and 3, Silk Flags and Cold Steel and Ironclads and Columbiads. I’ll offer these two collector’s items for about one month, and if there’s no action, retire them to a closet until next year, when their value will have doubled.

The Sands of Pride (Trade paper edition): $23.00

The hardback is available in limited quantities and will soon go out of print, so grab it while you can, at $35.00

The Fires of Pride is currently available only in hardback format. $32.00

A Frozen Hell (Trade paper edition) $21.00. The hardcover version is still in print, but quantities are limited and Algonquin will surely not reprint when their current stock is gone. If you’d prefer the much-nicer-looking hardback, it’s your for $35.00

Priest of Music is likewise only available in hardback, and quantities are low. Despite almost universally enthusiastic reviews, its sales were disappointing and have slowed to a trickle; the prospect of a trade paperback edition is therefore slight. I have three copies currently, and don’t know how much longer even I can get replacements. $40.00

Winter Fire trade paper edition: $20.00

(Note: I still have a small quantity of the Signet mass market paperback, all in very good condition. These are now extremely rare on the used book market, and almost never seen in such excellent shape. Due to their rarity, I’m asking $30.00. I also have one extra copy of the extremely scarce hardback (Dutton, 1992), on which serious book collectors may bid.).

A TRUE COLLECTOR’S ITEM: I have ONE copy of the fine anthology “The Song of Cthulhu” which has been autographed by me AND by editor/contributor Mark Stephen Rainey. E. A. Lustig, and my old friend and fellow Lovecraft addict, Fred Chappell, former Poet Laureate of North Carolina and winner of the Bollengin Prize. Do I have to add that this one goes to the highest bidder?

Dark Terrors 5 is not in stock, as it was published in the U.K. and obtaining author’s copies is a hassle. It does contain what I regard as my best novella in the horror genre, a 50,000-word gasper entitled “Drums”, so I humbly point you to the U.K. Amazon site to facilitate purchase.

The Darkest Thirst is one helluvva good vampire anthology, but because the publisher keeps getting screwed by distributors and the giant bookstore chains, I’d prefer you order this title directly from Amazon or a similar outlet.

Special note to readers who already own one or several of these books: From time to time, readers send me copies to be inscribed. I am happy to do this, because so far, this has only happened 10-15 times a year. IF this web site accomplishes what I hope it will – i.e., generate a significant increase in sales and interest in my work, I MAY have to start asking a small charge for this courtesy ($5.00 per book), although frankly I feel a bit smarmy about it. That’s because doing this for readers COULD begin to eat into my time. But for the moment, at least, I’ll be happy to keep on doing it as a way of saying “Thanks!” to fans of my work. HOWEVER, I must ask that you enclose a pre-addressed, pre-stamped mailer with the book(s) you want me to sign. So far, no one’s had the gall to ask me to autograph a book and then pay to send it back, but that might happen, and it would certainly piss me off, as it would any self-respecting author. If you really love the book in question – as most readers seem to have very intense personal feelings about the Mitropoulos biography, “Winter Fire” and “Bushwhackers” – you are certainly free to enclose a small donation, just to help this author meet his routine expenses, which are anything but small..

Another special note: It doesn’t happen often, but occasionally, especially at conventions and signings, someone will ask me to sign a particular issue of “PC Gamer” that contains a column, review, or feature story that’s especially dear to them. I’ll be happy to do that, too, under the same guidelines just cited above. Again, donations are appreciated in return for this service.

But enough of these mercenary matters! For those of you who know me primarily as a music critic and/or the biographer of the great, unjustly neglected conductor, Dimitri Mitropoulos, I invite you to peruse carefully the next and final segment of this web site, my record collectors’ archival duplicating Service: “Records in the Attic” – where you will find many, many exceedingly rare performances and compositions, any of which I will happily burn on to a CD for you at a very reasonable price. Onward!
